GMA Trucking RFP Webinar

Clayton Gerber, Stacey McCluskey, and Sam Pearl Schwartz with the Center for Green Market Activation, joined by Cristiano Façanha and Quintin Barnes with Smart Freight Centre, hosted a webinar on January 17, 2024 to launch the GMA Trucking RFP, a pilot procurement initiative aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty freight transportation using a book and claim/buyers alliance model.

The goal of the webinar was to educate carriers, fleet operators, and logistics stakeholders about the GMA Trucking program and outline submission guidelines for the zero-emission trucking RFP.

It also explains the book and claim system, modeled after renewable energy certificates (RECs), which separates zero-emission freight attributes from physical truck routes. It enables shippers to claim Scope 3 emissions reductions even if their goods aren’t delivered by a zero-emission truck, and connects carriers to a set of customers willing to pay the so called “green premium” associated with zero emission trucking. This win-win approach helps support the transition to cleaner, more sustainable trucking solutions.

GMA Trucking RFI Webinar

Andre de Fontaine, Clayton Gerber, and Sam Pearl Schwartz from the Center for Green Market Activation and Cristiano Façanha from Smart Freight Centre co-hosted this September 2024 webinar to introduce a Request for Information supporting a first-of-its-kind procurement program for zero-emission trucking. GMA Trucking aims to accelerate heavy-duty vehicle electrification and support transportation decarbonization strategies using a book and claim system and demand aggregating buyers alliance – following the successful model of similar initiatives in aviation and maritime.

Webinar Recording & Slides: Heavy Duty Transport and the Power of Buyers Alliances

In September 2024, GMA’s Kim Carnahan and Andre de Fontaine presented a public webinar alongside ZEMBA’s Ingrid Irigoyen, describing the power of buyers alliances to unlock deep decarbonization within heavy duty transport.  The recording can be viewed as follows and the presentation slides are available for download below.

Please note, the RFI process concluded in Fall 2024 and GMA is no longer accepting RFI responses.   As a first step, GMA Trucking has launched a request for information (RFI) directed at trucking carriers interested in deploying zero-emission heavy duty trucks. The feedback received from carriers will feed into the development and requirements of the forthcoming RFP, which will be released later in 2024. The RFI contains questions regarding experiences with heavy-duty ZEVs, deployment opportunities within respondent operations, commercial and purchasing perspectives, among other topics.
Decarbonizing the trucking sector

Heavy Duty Trucking

GMA, in partnership with Smart Freight Centre, coordinates GMA Trucking, a buyers alliance for zero emissions trucking service attributes with the goal of accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty trucking. GMA Trucking is supporting first-of-their-kind, scalable partnerships focused on getting battery electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) class 8 trucks on the road.  Heavy-duty vehicles account for more than 1.2Gt of CO2e emissions globally, while less than 1% of new medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold are BEVs or FCEVs. By bringing together trucking customers with truck manufacturers, low-carbon fuel providers, and fleet owners and operators, GMA Trucking will be able to fund low carbon trucks in regions where deployment is otherwise not possible.

Similar to GMA’s other initiatives, the trucking program will seek to procure environmental attribute certificates (EACs) for zero emission trucking services through a book-and-claim system, enabling a wide array of shippers to fund innovative projects as a way to reduce their Scope 3 emissions from on-road logistics and catalyze decarbonization in this hard-to-abate sector. Members work in collaboration with GMA to develop a rigorous, transparent system that enables them to invest in road freight transport decarbonization.

Heavy duty vehicles contribute more than 1.2 Gt of CO2e globally

Trucks emit 1/3 of on-road greenhouse gases

Less than 1% of new class 8 trucks sold are battery electric or fuel cell electric

Request for Proposal

As of December 17, 2024, GMA Trucking in partnership with Smart Freight Centre is launching a request for proposal (RFP) for zero-emission trucking service attributes. This first-ever joint procurement targets the deployment of approximately 250 Class 8 battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell trucks representing up to 14 million miles traveled per year. Through the RFP, GMA Trucking seeks to connect US carriers with corporate customers ready to take meaningful action to address their road freight emissions. Download this supplemental brochure for more information.

An informational webinar about the RFP was hosted January 17, 2025.  View the webinar recording.
